ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL SITE.

REFERENCES BY THE BISHOP.

Reference was made to-day by his Lordship, Bishop Wallis, in his address to Diocesan bynod, to the Anglican cathedral site in Wellington. JNo .iction, he said, was taken by the General Synod with regard to this Synod's request that power be given to sell or lease the property in Mulgrave-street on which the bishop's former residence • and the Diocesan Library now stand. The chief cause of this omission, was the opinion which was shared by some of Wellington's own representatives, that the spot, in which they were then met, might be found a suitable site for the cathedral. He did not agree with them. The changes which will evidently be caused to Thorndon by the reclamation of land for wharves, and by the building of two railway stations, appeared to him to make it very unlikely that that part of the city would ever be occupied by a large population. On the other hand, the site that was secured many years ago might not be the best they could desire, but it was central, ' and it was peopled by just the classes of inhabitants whom they were longing most earnestly to assemble in a large, free, and open church. But until the question of the site was settled one way or another, they might be sure that he should not consent to any alienation of the property in Mul-grave-street. "It is plain, however," he continued, "that there must be no thought of building the cathedral here until it is found possible to remove the present St. Paul's Church to another quarter. To place cathedral and parish church side by side would clearly be harmful to both; to substitute the former for the latter would be to violate one of the main purposes of our undertaking, on the i faith of which many generous contribuj tions were made. Fifteen years ago, when the population was far smaller than it is now, we saw the church accommodation in this city to be terribly insufficient, and the Cathedral Fund was started to largely increase it by an entrrely new building. I earnestly hope that in the course of next year, when the mibsion is over, we may renew our efforts with vigour. This, the capital of New Zealand, will be almost the only city in the province without a cathedral, when that at Dunedin has been built. This defect is a shame to our church in Wellington, and wo ought to remedy it without delay."

As a wind-up to the Municipal Conference on Thursday morning, the delegates will be given a fire brigade exhibition at 10.30. Then there will be the deputation to the Minister in reference to the proposals made by the conference. An excursion will follow to Day's Bay, where the delegates will be entertained by the Wellington City Council. This afternoon the ladies will be the guests of Lady Word.
