IN THE EARLY DAYS.
[BY TELEGRAPH — SPECIAL TO THE POST.] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. When a ploughman was at work on the banks of the Avon in the Christchurch Public Gardens last week his implement cut through an old Maori oven. Mr. Young, tho head gardener, communicated with the authorities at Canterbury Museum, who, as the result of some digging and searching, found the jawbone of a man and the bone of a dog, and a large number of pipi and other shells. It is stated that in the early days Maoris often went up the river in their canoes and cooked meals on the banks.
