• DISPUTE PARTIALLY SETTLED. THE EXEMPTIONS. A partial agrofeinoot has been arrived at in the dispute between tho Wellington branch of tho Amalgamated Engineers' Industrial Union of Workers and the employe™. In addition to the terms of the existing award, Easter Monday, Labour Day, and King* Birthday arc to bo paid for at time and a-half. Easter Saturday ie aloo to be included in the lut of holiday*, but *hould work be required to be performed on that day, it is only to be paid /or at ordinary raten. NIGHT WORK. Workers are only to be required to work on these shifts when the work is of an urgent and special character, btich a* breakdown, repairs, or slip work, and when they are so employed are to be paid 2s extra for each *h'ift. MINIMUM WAGE. No agreement was como to on this point. The union claimed Is 6d an hour ; the employers offered Is lid. The unions claimed for milling hands, Is 4£d au hour; slottern, drillers, and plainers, Is 3d an hour. Clause (c) in regard to apprentices was not agreed to. The employees' representatives were wiHing to strike out tlw provision as to employers dispensing with apprentice having to procure him another employer, if a limitation of apprentices was agreed to. PREFERENCE. No agreement was come to on the following clause : — "That preference bo given to the members of the Engineers' Industrial Union of Workers." EXEMPTIONS. The following agreement was arrived at in regard to exemptions :—: — In the cose of' such firms as the International Harvester Company, MasseyHarris Company, Reid and * Grey and others, who import manufactured machinery in whole or in part, the award is not to apply so far as the mere assembling of parts is concerned ; but is to apply to any repairing or permanent fixing of nuvli (Dacbiuery. Jn tho case of firms such as Balhnger and Company, Dunks and Son, who carry on business us plumbers and brass founders, they aro exempt from all tho conditions of this award, except where the class of work that is being carried out is substantially work usually performed by engineers and is recognised as a branch of that trade. Freezing companies arc exempt from the operations of the award so far as regards those persons who are employed in connection with the engines and machinery ; but the award applies to those who are employed in the erection of new engines, or in making alterations oe ropairs to existing plants.
