The state of parties (subject to changes when the final returns come in) —changes which may improve tho position of the Liberals— is : — LABOUR 45 LIBERAL 30 [The state of parties in the House after the election in December, 1906, was: — Anti-Socialists, 32; Labour, 26; Ministerialists (Deakinites), 17.] THE SENATE. in the election for Senators (18) tho Labour Party is leading in all the State*. THE LABOUR LEADER. The Hon. Andrew Fisher, the coming Prime Minister, was born at Crosshouse, Ayrshire, Scotland, on 29th August, 1862, and arrived in Queensland in 1885. In that State he was engaged in mining for several years. Elected a member of the Legislative Assembly for Gympie in 1893 and 1899, he was Secretary for Railways and Minister of Public Works in the Dawson Government (1899). He was returned to the first House of Representatives for Wide Bay, Queensland, in 1901, and re-elected in 1903 and 1906 ; was Minister of Trade and Customs in thb Watson Ministry in 1904, became deputy-leader 'of the Labour Party, in October, 1907, and was later elected Chairman of the Party in succession to the Hon. J. C. Watson, who had voluntarily retired from politics. He formed a Labour Ministry after the defeat of Mr. Deakin in November, 1908, but bU Government was defeated in May, 1909.
