REPLY TO A CHALLENGE.

» . .-. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I had my attention drawn to a challenge, by Smith and Smith, Ltd., glass merchants, to a statement I made at the Hospital Trustees' meeting Rome weeks ago, that if I could prove it, that firm would pay £10 to the hospital funds, and I venture to think that had they acted with their usual business acumen, they would have let the matter be forgotten. I did not seek a discussion in the- public press ; usually I have avoided this kind of notoriety. I stated our firm had imported a certain kind of glass at 3Jd per foot, and probably I should have had to pay Is 2d per foot for the same glass, it procured from the local merchants. We had 300 feet to spare, and sold it io a wholesale merchant for 8d per foot, and as more was required, a member of our firm w«ited on Smith and Smith, and wo were offered this glass as a favour at Is per foot. Had I the time to look up my invoices, 1 could show Smith and Smith, their own accounts, where I paid the Is 2d per foot for this class of glass, or perhaps even more. I am not given to making rash and misleading etatements, and can vouch, and have proof for all I stated in that meeting, in advocating tho importation of our own crockery for the hospital. Send along the £10, please. — I am, etc., JAMES TREVOR. Wellington, 9th April, 1910.
