Foity of the lale Mr. Charles Yerkes's pictures were f.old by auction in New i'ork, and realised £134,000 sterling. Sir Joseph Duveen purchased Turner's picture "Rockets and Blue Lights," for £25.800. It proved a record day's sale. Only one-filth of the collection hat> yet been offered. Joseph Mallorcl William Turner, the famous landscape painter, was born in London in 1775, and died in 18-51. The £on of a barber, his education was ineagra, but ho devoted himself to drawing at a vury early age. In 1789 he entered ths school of the Royal Academy, and for a short time worked with Sir Joshua Reynolds. His popular fame is due largely to the enthusiastic praise of nun in the writings of Ruckin.
