When the Newcastle liner Caivnvona, bound to America with 900 Russians and Armenians aboard, was off Beac-hy Head (on the coast of Sussex) it was discovered that the coal bunkeis were on fire. An explosion blew a hatch to pieces, injuring twenty persons. A panic followed. Many men attempted to rush the women's boats, and in the struggle a woman's spine was broken. The British crew, however, using determined measures, prevented a disaster. The sail6rs knocked men down right and left. Four of the passengers jumped overboard, but were rescued. Finally all those on board were transferred to other steamers, which carried them to safety. Prince and Princess Louis of Batteuberg personally served food to the famished emigrants on theii: landing at the Dover pier.
