PRISONERS SENTENCED. A FEMALE HOUSEBREAKER. Three prisoners were brought before his Honour the Chief Justice to-day for | semence. ! THEFT. Charles Johnston, who pleaded guilty j to the theft of a cart at Otaki, and who is awaiting tiial on the theft of a horre j (which he denied), w.is brought forward, [and through his counsel (Mr. O'Leary) ! now desired to plead guilty to the second charge. Mr. O Leary explained that the expedition on which* he started was one. He had not been on two thieving expeditious. The prisoner was a young nun of 20, and previously bore a good character. He was sentenced to tix mouths' imprisonment with hard labour. His Honour remarked thai jn all probability no further sentence would be imposed on the second charge, which would have Xo be dealt with at the May sittings. Jesse O'Brien, alias John M'Carthy, for theft from a dwelling, was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment. He had previously served six months in gaol. Prisoner was quite a young man. His Honour said he. had evidently been loafing about hotels, and stole anything he cuuld lay his hands on to get liquor. AN OLD OFFENDER. Elizabeth Ward, alias Gillie*, on an admitted charge of breaking and entering, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment. She had been twelve times convicted of theft, eleven times for drunkenness, once as a rogue and vagabond, and had served terms in gaol of as much as two and three year*.
