BOWLING.

THE NORTHERN ASSOCIATION. A meeting of tho Council of the Northern Bowling Association was held laft night, the president (Colonel Collins) being in the chair. Further correspondence was read trom the Feilding Club relative to its claim for a refund of entrance fees in connection with the last tournament, owing to the absence, through the illness of a player, of one of the rinks. The refund asked for was 10s per man — £2 in all. It was decided that the amount be refunded. The president of the Palmerston North Bowling Club wrote, asking what was the position of the Banner and Shield, now that the "open-door" policy had been adopted. Under the rule (17) previously in force the banner went to the club scoring the greatest number of wins. The opinion was expressed that the rule wa& badly worded, as, under tlie sectional system, a club whose team did not win the greatest number 'of games might be the winner. In fact, the rule was, and had been for some time, inoperative since the introduction of the sectional system, and it was decided, in reply, to point this out, and to add that steps would be taken to amend the rule in the necessary direction. ' Mr. Elliott, president of the Auckland Bowling Club, was nominated as vice-president of the association. An Auckland delegate suggested that other clubs in Auckland should be written to for nominations, as delegates urged that thero might be other bowlers in the northern city who were eligible for the position. It was decided to write to the Auckland club, asking ifc to convene a meeting of the various affiliated' Auckland clubs, for the purpose of selecting a nominee for he, position. As the sub-committee appointed for the purpose had not prepared its report on tne subject, the question of the- appointment of a secretaary in place of Mr. J. H. Mentiplay, who recently resigned, was not dealt with. It was stated that the sub-committee was, in this position — that it could not inform applicants for the office whether the post was to be salaried or honorary. It was decided to empower the subcommittee to receive applications for the position either on a salary or as an honorary officer. The meeting also asked the sub-committee to report on the subject within four weeks. A committee consisting of the chairman and Messrs. Dixon, Bush, Brunskill, Brackenridge, Roberts, and Barry Was appointed to revise the rule. Mr. J. J. Roberts raised the question of whether, under the new system of testing lately " adopted by the New Zealand Association, the bowls in the North Island would pass in South Island tournaments. It was pointed out that the matter could be decided by the committee set up to revise the rules. The Wellington Club is about to try an experiment in connection with its greens during the coming winter. A number of sheep are to be put on for a month or two previous to the top dressing, and the result is being awaitI ed with great interest.
