Rowing. (By "Scull.")

SCULLING. Arnst and Whelch faced one another last Monday for the championship ot the world, and at tho outset there appeared to bo every likelihood of a sensational issue But by lirtuo of clean sculling and abnormal driving the champion gained the upper hand, after tho opening effort over a quarter of a milo had finished. In winning comfortably by three length* Arnst created a record as far as his races in Now Zealand aro concerned. It is his biggest victory, but, big as it is, it was not a bit moro than ho deserved, for against his power, length, and accuracy, tho fa<it and dashing work of Wholch •ecmed poor. Whelch was quite unable to cope with Arnst's tactics. The champion attacks so strongly that ho wears out his opponent, and by slow degrees I drawn ( h(i fire from his sculling. These tactics aro co disconcerting and dishcartnning that they engender in an opponent a certain recklessness. His (tho opponent's) best 6troke» and best drive come, but he is nonplussed a« to how to deal with and defeat this obstinacy ; ho vacillates, and vacillation is just the state of mind which plays into Richard Arnst's bandf!. Whelch is a resourceful fculer, poszennng a style which producoH a wonderful turn of speed for such & light man, but against tho champion he could do nothing. STAR BOATING CLUB. During the week the following sculling racei were, got off:— Senior Single Sculls — J. Bennett defeated P. S. Turnbull by foveral lengths. Tho winner improved as the race woro on. Final heat-J. Bennett met W. H. Brewer. Tho contestants gavo a- display greatly in advance of some of those they havo been responsible for before their own supporters. Bennett's length and drive wero tbo delight of tho spectators. Brewer failod signally at the business end, but his general work was distinctly good. Bennett won by a length and a half. Junior Sculls— Thinf heat: J. C. Dudley had litflo opposition in his race with F. G. Craig, and won comfortably. Craig did not clear his hands with celerity, nor did he drive with power, but with experience polish may como. Fourth heat: J. Cowles oventually got a fine grip of H. J. Harrop in this race, and won easily. Harrop is a sculler in tho making ; he needs experience. Semi-final: Dudley and Beaumont faced tho starter in this event, and the last-named sculler coon showed tho onlookers that ho was smart. In the first half Beaumont was full of energy, and capable of going through the encounter unbeaten. Tho finalists arc — Beaumont, Dean, and Cowles. WELLINGTON ROWING CLUB. The races for the Junior and Handicap \ Pculls, which are set down to take place rhortly, will see the reason almost at an end. PETONE ROWING CLUB. Only tho Norton sculls event is to finish and probably another four-oar race to como off; the season will then quietly close 1 havo to thank "Rowlock" for tho assistance he has given me in my endeavour to havo this column complefco sad accurate. j
