SISTERS OF MERCY.

DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS. (»T TIIIQMAVH—BTtCIAL TO THE POST.] AUCKLAND, ThU Day. The Sitters of Mercy, St. Mary's Convent, celebrate the diamond jubilee of the Order in Auckland to-day. On 9th April, 1850, Bishop Pompallier, with seven Sisters of Mercy, under the guidance of Rev. Mother Cecilia Maher, landed in Auckland, which is described by Mother Cecilia Maher, in one of her letter*, as "& ringular-looking town, partly in a valley and partly straggling up a hill, wooden houses, streets marked, and grass everywhere." The enterprising band of Sis^prs. left Dublin on Bth August, 1849, for London, travelled thence to Antwerp, from which place they embarked on 27th August in the ship Oceanica. After a long and perilous journey they landed in Sydney, and were the guest* for several days of the Benedictine Sisters. A quiet sail of rome weekt, brought them to Auckland, which they sighted on 7th April, 1850. On the 9th the Sisteis bade adieu to the Oceanica, and landed on the beach, where all the inhabitants came to welcome them. The subsequent works of the Sisters of Mercy ,\ro well known. The present hous^— St. Mary's Convent, Ponsonby — takes its place amongst the educational institutions of the Dominion. A diamond jubilee bazaar is to take place at the end of the year.
