BEACH AEROPLANE.

TO COMPETE IN AUSTRALIA. On Friday week Mr. William J. H. Beach, inventor of an aeroplane, the distinctive features of which have already been described in The Post, will leave for Australia to make tho necessary arrangements with regard to his taking part in the great aeroplane content, to be neld shoilly at some spot in Australia, probably in Victoria. This contests will be one of the biggcot of its kind ever held, and has been instituted jointly # by the Commonwealth Government and the Aeroplane Society of Australia. Tho competitors will be restricted to native-born Australians andjfNcw Zealandert, who have lived in Australia for at least two years. The first prixe will t» £10,000, of which £6000 i* offered by the Commonwealth Government and £5000 by the Aeroplane Society. It it the object of the Government, in offering this sum, to obtain a machine suitable for military pnrpoaet ; the Aeroplane Society it actuated solely by a desire to encourage aviation in Australia. The Commonwealth Government has accordingly reserved first right of purchase of the successful machine, and it will require a loan of the machine for the first three month*, at a price to be agreed upon by arbitration after the contest. The precise date for the contest is not yet definitely known, but entries clore on the 30th June next. Mr. Beach informed a Post representative that on going to Australia he would represent both New Zealand and Australia nt the contest, and in view of this he has decided to dispose of onehalf of his interest in the syndicate to any persons in Wellington who would care to take up shares. Mr Beach's intention is. on arrival in Australia, to put the engines in the hands of a large engineering firm there, who havo asked for an order to make the engine. A model of the aeroplane has already been tested in Wellington, with results 1 that were considered snti-fuctory.
