In alluding to the P. and O. service and the comments thereon made at Wellington, the Star cay? :— "We may be pardoned for believing that Auckland py virtue of its natural advantages and its position in relation to Australia ia necessarily the port of call which would be selected first for such a purpose, but now that the service is established here, and it appears to have given the P. and O. Company every satisfaction, we are quite nieparcd to admit that the commercial inteiest of the whole country would be promoted by an extension of the service even if some of the boats were to call at Wellington. We hope that this proof of our magnanimity will make some sort of impression upon our friends in the Empire City, more especially as we entirely agree with several representative Wellingtonians that the selection of a port of call is really a matter for the P. and O. Company to decide for itself." A CABLEGRAM FROM SIR THOMAS SUTHERLAND. In regard to the extended service of the P. and O. steamers, tho company has decided that Auckland is to be made the poit of call. This information was received to-day by Mr. J. H. Gunsou, chairman of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, in the form of a cablegram from Pir Thomas Sutherland, chairman of directors of the P. and O. Compauy. Mr. Gtmson cabled to Sir Thomas on Monday last expressing the hope that Auckland would be retained as the port of call. The reply to hand is worded : "Yes, Auckland. '
