A VIGOROUS PROTEST. PROPOSED LOCAL BODIES' ACTION. The Hutt- Wellington road formed the •object of debate at the Makara County Council meeting to-day. The chairman (Mr. F. T. Moore) said serious complaints had been made to him with respect to the Hutt-Wellington road. The matter had already been referred to by the Mayor of Onsiow (Mr. J. G. Harkness). The work had been carried on by the Government in a most extravagant manner, said the chairman, and the road had been raised in somet places 3ft above the present road. This was preposterous. The cost wonld be enormous. He moved : "That the Mayors of Wellington, Gnslow, Petone, and Lower Hutt, and chairmen of the Hutt and Makara County Councils, be asked to meet at the Hutt County Council offices on 19th April at 2 p-m. to discuss the extravaSut cost of the work of widening the ntt-road, which expenditure has to be subsequently borne by the local bodies named in this motion." The road rased three feet, the chairman continued, was in front of the Vacuum Oil Co., and hundreds, prob~*ably thousands, of yards of metal would be required to raise the leveL Councillor Haggerty said that the prooceed conference should have been held long ago. The chairman asserted that tens and tons of thousands of pounds of local bodies' money were being wasted.
