FRENCH NAVAL RESERVISTS.

A STRIKE AT MARSEILLES. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. PARIS, sth April. The naval reservists at Marseilles declared a 24 hours' strike, as a protest against the prosecution of a dozen deserters. The authorities declined to be intimidated, and the reservists thereupon decided that the ships should not leave Marseilles until their demands were satisfied. Thts crews of nil vessels came ashore, and 600,000 tons of cargo and the outward mails arc detained. Tho Messageiies Maritimcs Company have applied for bluejackets to complete their crew«. The reservists have appealed to other ports to join the strike. Recent r.trikes cost Marseilles £4,060,000. TROUBLE SPREADING. (Received April 6, 10 a.m.) PARIS, sth April The reservists' striko has spread to Toulon. The French Navy is manned partly by conscription and partly by voluntary enlistment. The Inscription Maritime, dntin^ back to 1683, owed its origin to W. J. B. Colbert, tho Minister of Maiinr, in Louis XlV s time. It contains the names of all male individuals devoted to a seafaring life from tho 18th to the 50th year of age.
