ANARCHIST BOMB.

PLUCKY OFFICIALS WHO SAVED A BUILDING. An Italian anarchist on Sunday, 13th February, made an -attempt to blow wf 'the Ma-irie at Bonnes, near Toulon, reports the Chronicle's correspondent. Surprised at the moment he was about to deposit in the building a bomb containing, dynamite, the Italian drew a revolver from his pocket, and fired twice at the police guard who sought to arrest him. He next placed the weapon in his own mouth and fired twice, inflicting injuries which will probably result in his death. The Italian presented himself at the office of the Mayor's secretary, carrying a bag. Finding he was alone there, he drew a bomb from the bag, and, placing it on the counter, proceeded to ignite the fuse with his lighted cigar. At this moment the local tax-collector and the police guard entered the building. Tak-

ing in tb.G situation at a glance, they flung themselves upon the Anarchist. In the struggle the lighted bomb was overthrown, and the burning fuse became detached from it. This alone saved the plucky officials and the whole building from being blown to pieces. The Anarchist fought desperately, and, disengaging one of his hands, pulled out a revolver and fired twice. The shots missed their intended victim, and the Italian then shot himself, and fell on the floor. Being questioned, he gave the name of Baptiste. The motive for the attempted outrage is revenge. The Italian -was recently convicted for a petty offence, and he declared that he would kill the Magistrate who tried him. This official was in a room adjoining that in which the man placed the bomb. Had he not been disturbed he would probably have succeeded in his murderous scheme.
