SUBMARINE ERUPTIONS OFF NEW ZEALAND.

AUCKLAND, sth April. Submarine eruptions have been occurring lately in the vicinity of Kawhia, at a point between Albatross Point and Ga.i.iot Island. About five Have now occurred, and those who havo witnessed them state that the water is thrown UD us bigb as the mast of a schooner. *T'uat the disturbance is considerable k bho-.rn by the fact that the beach for about twelve miles in length ia covered wit I red and black mud and deep sea ■hell-, after eacli eruption, added to mhi>\: the .smell of sulphur is unpleasantly strong. Gaptein Liddle, who lives threo miles away, and is an invalid, is able to tell by the rrcng smell of sulphur when there has been another eruption. Th.re is . a hot spring near Kawhia harbour, but so far this bas not shown any ir crease in volume _ when these erupt.v.i.- occur, and yet this same spring on the beach showed great activity during the recent eruption of Ngauruhoe.
