PRESS ASSOCIATION. NOXIOUS WEED CASES.

NAPIER, 4th April. Several defendants in noxious weed prosecutions at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday seemed to feel aggrieved at being haled before the court. The chief obection appeared to be on account of the great difficulty of keeping down the gist in question (Californian thistle), ne man put his case graphically : "It grows," he said, "in most inaccessible places, and no living man could get there. It would take wings to do it. I would far rather contract to clear Hawkes Bay of rabbits than to remove the thistle from some of these spots. ' ' In imposing fines, Mr. M'Carthy, S.M., said that although it is almost impossible to get rid of the weed, yet there was the .law, and it must be complied with. Compliance with the law 1 prevented the spread of the weed to other persons' property. The Magistrate added that his experience in Southland showed that very serious consequences might result from Californian thistle being allowed to teed in tha beds of creeks.
