THE DOCK.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE. "I am of opinion," said Mr. C. J. Crawford last night, "that if possible the. goinc on with the dock should be indefinitely postponed, and that it is far better to have a charge of £2000 or £2500 a year on the dues of the harbour than to complete the dock and have a chargo of £10,000 to £15,000 a year, which we can't recoup in any way, because the dock won't pay." The attention of Mr. K. Fletcher, chairman of the Harbour Board, was drawn to-day to Mr. Crawford's statement, but Air. Fletcher preferred lo observe silence for the pre.««ent. After the present experiments had been concluded, the board would discuss the dock thoroughly. These experiments are the last of a series adopted iv an endeavour to discover a cement that will behave natisfactorily in deep water. There is a | scoria ingredient in the mixture that has been used, and the rate of deposition of I the concrete-blocks to form the bed was quickened. It is anticipated that within | a fortnight the result of the experiment will be definitely known.
