TO OBTAIN FAIR PLAY FOR THE NORTH ISLAND.

[BT TZLEGBAra— PBKSS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, This Day. The Hastings Chamber of Commerce discussed the anomalies in railway fares and freights, and resolved that the secretary be requested to write to all Chambers of Commerce in the North Island asking if they are favourably disposed towards the formation of a North Island Railway League composed in the first instance of members of Chambers of Commerce in the North Island, and to be formed for the purpose of endeavouring to get North Island members in Parliament to combine and obtain fair play foif the North Island in railway niauagement and expenditure generally. AUCKLAND, This Day. Mr. Gunson, cliairmau of the Chamber of Commerce, saya the proposal to form a North Island League is by no means new. It has been discussed by the Auckland Chamber from time to time. | In bra opinion the time was certainly | ripe for carrying into effect something like this. Members of the Auckland Chamber are of one mind on the subject. The chamber had been working quietly with the Auckland Railway League to further the interests of northern lines. Now that the North Island holds the balance of power in Parlia* meat so far as members were concerned, some initial action should have an appreciable effect. There seems no reason why the Government should not be forced to give that attention to the railway lines of the north that in tho past has been given to the south end of the Dominion to the detriment of northern interests.
