At one time, and that not so very long ago, residents of the upper and uppci'-middio levels round Wellington had bitter complaints against the inadequacy of the city water supply. Particularly was it so with the people of Naiin-street and its adjacent elopes. Now there arc no complaints from this quarter. The mechanical arrangement <>f an ingenious vnlvo in the main halfway up tho slope line proved exceedingly effective in securing abundance of water during the day. With tho hilltop towns of Brooklyn, Kelburne, and Northland tho storage tanks on the highest points in the neighbourhood have solved tho water problem. The electro-turbine pumps have piovcd highly satisfactory. When the' Kos'incath reservoir is finishedy the resident* of tho lofty slopes of Mount Victoria will bo satisfied, and only Upper Newtown and Wadestown will remain to bo furnished with a high pressure supply. The bazaar which was held last week in the Sydney-street Schoolroom in nid of the Wadettowi^ Catholic Church will be continued this 'evening. Among the items on the evening's programme is the dancing of an Irish jig by Mies Guildford — a performance which she gave on Saturday with much succeed. "Will you give mo time to pay, your Worship?" strongly pleaded a defendant in ths Magistrate's Court to-day, when fined £20 for *ly-grog selling. Penalty for default v/as two months' imprisonment. He suggested that if he were given tho opportunity ho could obtain tho money from his relations in Australia. Sub- Inspector Norwood objected to the application. "The police," he said, "will assist defendant to get the money, but if he is given time, perhaps he will make a perfot.al application for it in Australia." The Bench advised defeuJant to give the police any address, from which the money could bo procured. In response to the representations of tho Rugby Union that it has not been well treated this season by the City Council in the allocation of sports grounds, the Reserves Committee, it is understood, has decided to recommend tho council to allow the union the use of Anderson Park for football during the winter months. The committee had been in some doubt as to the wisdom of permitting Rugby football on recently-mado parks, out after inspecting Duppit-slreet, Kplbnrne Park, mid Anderson Park, it is satisfied that the grass is not likely be materially injured by tho popular winter game. The Reserve Committee will present its annual report to the City Council at next Thurhduy fortnight's meeting. Consequent upon (ho damage by water occasioned to Meeern. Ellin and Manton's wholesale grocery stock during the lato fire at Messrs. Butler Bros.' warehouse, nn auction sale has been arranged to take plac<» of the hah ago, ami will be i-ondurtedi by Mecgrn. George Thomas and Co., tit the Fruit Exchange, Allen and Blair itreete, on Thuriday afternoon, at 2 o'clock. Particulan appear .ia out auction^ eolusyu.

There is, we are assured, no truth in the statement that Sir W. J. Steward purposes visiting England at an early date. At the inquest touching the death of Winifred M. Sims — the particulars of which appear in another column — a verdict was ••eturned of death from natural cause 6. Mr. Thomas H. Robinson, who had been identified with the Makara district for a great many years, died at the Wellington Hospital yesterday, aged 78. The deceased took a leading part in locaU affairs and was for some time a member of the Hutt County Council. He also occupied a seat on the Makara Road Board. Commissioner Martin having resigned his position as a member of the Upper Hutt Town Board, an election to fill the vacancy will be held on 23rd April. Nominations close on 16th April.
