MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

With a record of twenty previous convictions against her, Aurue M'Grath appeared in the Magistrate's Court before Mr. \V. R. Haselden, S.M., charged with intemperance. A fine of 20s was inflicted, the option being seven days' imprison ment. Nellie Wilson entered the secondhand shop of Stephen Penfold as a customer. She inspected a dress, and during the shopkeeper's temporary absence, she attired herself in it, and attempted to leave the shop without payment. Her dishonesty resulted in a sentence of fourteen days' imprisonment. Frank Hunt and Alice Brown were convicted of being rogues and vagabands and discharged. Three inebriates — Richard Evans, Peter Mulcahy, and Charles O'Connor — were each fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment : and another, a first offender, was mulcted in. the turn of ss, with the usuaJ option. Nicholas Scallan, who had been helplessly drunk, was fined 10s, with costs 2s 6d. Penalty for default was fixed at forty-eight hoars' imprisonment. For insobriety, Donald M'Pherson was fined ss, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment, and for damaging a pane of glass, the property of Michael Conway, the aame accused was ordered to ' pay a Rite ot 10s, with costs lit 6d. The alternative in the case was seven days' imprisonment. A fine of £5 was inflicted in the case of John Frederick Boyle, .who pleaded guilty to a charge of using obscene language on Lambton-quay on Saturday night. The alternative of payment is one month's imprisonment. Jesse O'Brien, alias John M'Caxthy, charged with stealing clothing valued at £4 from the house of John Shortis, on the application of the police was remanded till Wednesday. On the application of Mr. Herdman, a remand till Friday was allowed in the .case of James Graham, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing a bicycle, valued at £5, the property of Henry Walter Biddle. Bail was fixed at £25. It was admitted by Alfred Johnson that he entered the City Hotel on the 23rd July, 1909, when he was under the ban of a prohibition order. A fine of £2 was inflicted, or in default fourteen days' imprisonment. A prohibition order for one year was issued against Annie Johnston, who did not appear. Three persona — John Calvert, John Ferrel, and George Haetingi — were each fined £2, in default 14 days' imprisonment, for entering licenced premUea during- the currency of prohibition orders. The two last-named defendant* did not appear. Robert Lee*, appearing on remand on a charge of deserting from the- s.i>. Cornwall, was convicted and discharged.
