♦ HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Commerce Division of the Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, London, dated 2nd April : — Mutton.— The market i* quiet but steady; holders are firm in anticipation of moderate shipments. The average price of Canterbury mutton is 4Ad per Ib, North Inland 4*d. Lamb. — The market is firm, although supplies are increasing. Average price Canterbury s£d per lb, other New Zealand lamb sid. Beef. — The market is steady. Stocks of New Zealand beef on hand arc light, and holders are not anxious to sell. Supplies of American chilled beef are large. The s.s. Marathon arrived during the week with the second rhipment of Linley Process Queensland chilled beef, which was landed in fair condition, and realised about 3|d per lb for hindquarters. The average price to-day for hindquarters of (frozen) New Zealand beef is 4Jd per lb, forequarters 3|d. Butter.— The market ia firm ; there is Kid demand, but buyers are cautious, c average price for tho week for choicest New Zealand is 122s per cwt, Australian and Argentine 120s, Danish 128s, Siberian 119s. Cheese.— The market i& firm, although high prices are restricting bu*jnest>. The average price of New Zealand finest white cheese is 62s 6d, coloured 61s. Hemp. — The market is very unsettled, with a poor local demand. Prospects are uncertain, and depend entirely upon Manila. The average price of New Zealand good fair hemp on spot is £24 10s per ton, fair £23 10s; same prices for forward shipment. Manila fair current £24 10s on spot, and £23 for forward shipment. The Manila output for the week was 28,000 bales. Cocksfoot. — Market quiet but firm. The average prices of bright, clean, 171b. New Zealand seed on ppot is 72s per cwt. Wheat.— Market quiet, but moderate I business doing. New Zealand wheat is selling against shipment. Oats. — Market steady with moderate demand. New Zealand iparrow bills ex franary on spot per quarter ot 3841b, 9s ; New Zealand Danish per quarter of 320!b, 17s 3d. Peas. — Market qniet; small business doing. New Zealand partridge per 5041b, 545. Beam. — Market firm, with more enquiry. New Zealand f.a.q. old crop per 5041b, 40a 6d. Hops. — Th« market is quiet, but holders are firm.
