PERSONAL MATTERS.

Dr. M'Evedy was a passenger for the South by the Mararoa on Saturday eveaing. The Rev. C. H. Laws,preside>nt of the New Zealand Methodist Conference, is on a visit to Wellington. Mr H. N. Holmes, genera' secretary of the V.M.C.A., will return to Wellingion from Wanganui this afternoon. Messrs W. A. Wilson and H. J. Brunt, of the Chnstchurch Post Office, have been transferred to the head office at Wellington. Mr. A. H Casey, who has been attending the Catholic Young Men's Conference at Greymouth, returned to Wellington yesterday. Mr. W. Paget Gale, of Dunedin, has been appointed adjudicator of vocal and instrumental music for the Auckland Competition Society. Mr. C. J. Reakra, Chief Government (Veterinarian, and Mr. D. Cuddie, Dairy Commissioner, who have been on a visit to the Taranakt and Wanganui districts, returned to Wellington o n Saturday. Constable Osborn, of Timaru, and Constable Snow, of the Christchurch District Office, have been appointed acting-detectives, and attached to the Christchurch detective staff. ActingDetectives Ward and Gibson, of Christchurch, have been promoted to the rank of detectives. Mr. G. Witty, M.P. tor Riccarton, who recently underwent an operation for appendicitis, is reported to be making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Mr. E. Trelawnv, superintendent in Australasia of the P. and 0. Company, strrived in Wellington from Christchurch yesterday, in the Old Country for some time. The Hon. M. Beehan, M.L.0., who is at present in Wellington, will return to Auckland to-morrow. Mr. M. Clark has resigned the position of hon. secretary of the Thorndon Bowling Club, and Mr. H. A. Jackman, a member of the board of directors, has taken over the duties of the position. Mr. A. E. Airev, who during the past two years has filled the positions of acting-superintendent and clerk in charge of the Eastern Extension Cable Company's station at Wakapuaka (Nelson), has left for Melbourne, where he will take up an important position on the staff of tho company. The Hon. Hamilton Gilraer and Mrs. Gilmer, and their son, Mr. S. Gilmer, will be passengers for London by the P. and O. steamer Morea from Auckland on tho 13st instant. Mr. Allan Maguire, of Wellington, and his son, Mr. J. Maguire, will also go Home by the same vessel. Mrs. Maguire has been Mr. J. W. Joynt, M.A., Registrar of tho New Zealand University, has been appointed agent of the university in London, succeeding Mr. H. W. Eve, who has resigned owing to advancing years. Mr. Joynt entered Trinity College, Dublin, in 1873, becoming a Foundation Scholar in 1875. He won double firstclass honours in classics and mental and moral science in 1877, a studentship of £100 a year for seven years, and a Fellowship prizo in 1879, taking his M.A. degree in 1880. Mr. Joynt came to New Zealand in 1886 for the benefit of his health, and in 1889 was appointed principal of Nelsob College, where he remained until 1898, when he became Registrar of the University of New Zealand. Mr. Joynt will leave for London in September to assume his new office from the Ist of January, 1911. Mr. B. Hector has been appointed Acting-Regis-trar in the meantime 'from the date of Mr. Joynt's departure.
