Spain. LOCAL AND GENERAL, Advices received by the Postal authorities state that H.M.S. Pioneer, which arrived at Auckland, from Sydney, on Saturday, brought only the Auckland portion of the English and Australian mail. The southern portion was put on board the Wimmera, due at Auckland to-day, and is expected to reach Wellington by to-morrow afternoon's express. The duties of the position of Financial member of the Council of Defence, vacated through the appointment of Colonel Collins as Auditor and Controller-Gen-eral, are being temporarily carried out by Captain Mabm. Lieut.-Colonel Tuson, Adjutant and Quartermaster-General, and Major Lascelles return to England in May next, and the appointments of Director of Military Education and Training, and Director of Military Operations and Intelligence, will be filled upon the arrival from England of two ofheers of the Imperial General Staff, whose namo.» will be announced shortly. At present those positions are being temporarily filled by Lieut.-Colonel Ohaytor and Major Lascelles, and it is understood that when the two Imperial officers arrive, Lieut.Colonel Chaytor will be appointed Adjutant and (Juartermabter-General. In the Magistrate's Court on Friday Mr. W. E. Haselden, S.M., on two occasions refused an application by the police for expenses for witnesses. A similar request was made by Sub-Inspec-tor Norwood this morning, which Mr. Haselden again refused. "Does your Worship make it a rule," asked the Sub-Inspector, "that the police should not ask for witnesses' expenses?" "Oh, no;" replied the magistrate, "only in these petty prohibition order cases." Mr. Haselden then explained that if he alI lowed expenses he would have to reduce \ the fine, and in similar cases this made the fines appear very unequal. Arrangements iti connection with the visit of the children and adults under the control of the various charitable institutions in Wellington to the Opera House next Wednesday afternoon have now been completed. The third matinee of "Peter Pan" will bo given on that occasion, and the children and old people referred to will witness the performance by invitation of Mr. J. C. Williamson. About 450 children and 50 adults will be present. They are to be at the i Opera House before half -past 1 o'clock.
