ANGLICAN PRIMATE OF AUSTRALIA.

ARCHBISHOP OF SYDNEY ELECTED. By Telegraph. — Press Aiioclatton.— Copyright. SYDNEY, 31st March. The election of the Anglican Primate of Australia resulted in tiie .selection of the Archbishop of Sydney (Dr. Wright). Dr. Clarke (Archbishop of Melbourne) and Dr. Donaldson (Archbishop of Brisbane) were also nominated. At an election in February a deadlock arose, there being an equal vote in favour of the Archbishops of Sydney and Brisbane. There were three candidate*, namely, Archbishops of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, and the voting papers were issued to these as well as to the Bishops of Batfrurat, Tasmania, Adelaide, Newcastle, Perth, Goulbum, Grafton and Armidale, Ballarat, North Queensland and Bunbury. The Bishops of New Guinea and North. West Australia were ineligible to vote, not being in occupation of their sees. Sixteen papers were returned, the three candidates not voting. The first scrutiny resulted an follows :—Sydnej, 7; Brisbane, 6 ; Melbourne, 3. The second added two votes to Brisbane and one to Sydney, thus making a tie. The scrutineers then tested the result by tho method adopted at the Melbourne University, and the results were exactly the same. No provision is made in the Church regulations in the event of a tie resulting in the election for the primary. On two occasions ties have taken place in the nynod of the diocese of Melbourne, one being when the Revs. Canon ■Ford and S. C. Kent received the same number of votes for o vacant canonry, and the decision was then determined by lot. The some iliing occurred subsequently, when Canon Drought and the late Cnnon Tress obtained the same number of votes, and it was again determined by lot. Since then the synod has decided that in the event of a tie n. fresh election shall take place. The regulation* of the Melbourne dioceae, however, have nothing to do with the election for the primacy. Dr. Comidge, Actintf-Piimale. who will now vacate office, will remain Senior BMiop of Australia und Tasmania.
