___________ LOCAL AND GENERAL Private information received in Christchurcb (telegraphs our local correspondent) indicates that Sir Ernest Shackleton has abandoned his intention of leading an expedition into Alaska, at any rate for the present. A cablegram received a few days ago stated that he proposed to take an expedition to Adelie Land in 1912, and this seems to suggest an intention to be in the neighbourhood of MWlurdo Sound when Capt. Scott's southern party returns from its march towards tho pole. From to-day, subscribers to the Tele phone Exchange will not be notified of the individual items debited against them for bureau communications.
