ACCOMMODATION REFUSED.

LICENSEE HELD TO BE JUSTIFIED. AUCKLAND, 30th March. Mr. Kettlo, S.M., gave judgnienUhis mornine in the ca«e of the police versus Flewellyn, licensee of the Royal Hotel. Defendaut was charged with refusing accommodation to He"my Temple. The case had occupied the court several day*, and excited much interest. Mr. Kettle said the evidence sufficiently justified the licensee in refusing admittance to T«n« pie. The latter admitted he had nothing to complain of when staying in the hotel previously. Taking into ccri sideration his remarks to the waitress about the conduct of the hotel and the food, then his remarks in the vestibule when he mad* himself a nuisance to the licenseo and people in the hotel, his Worship considered the licensee was jus- j tified iv refusing the man admission again. The Magistrate characterised Temple's repetition of the remarks in the bar, of the hotel, ana applying them to the wife of ihe licensee, was a gross, malicious, and cowardly insult to the hostess, and *hat if Flewellyn had known of his conduct on that occasion he would nave been justified in taking Temple by the scruff of the neck and kicking him out of the hotel. The Magistrate could not understand why the police had not taKen the case up. Sub-Inspector Hendrey remarked that it wai orobab'e the oialter would go furthpr, and be heard in another place. CLOSE SEASON FOR GAME. A COMPROMISE. CHRISTCHURCH,' 31sl March. The Hon. D. Buddo states that in view of the numerous petitions forwarded by acclimatisation societies, asking for suspension of section 26 of the Animals' Protection Act, which makes 1910 a close season for game, the Government has decided to recommend the Governor to suspend the operation of the section as regards black swan, grey duck, and imported game for a period of one month from 14th May next. This will apply only to those districts that have specially applied for an open season, and only to those varieties of game for which exemption from the provisions of the Act has been asked. The Minister states that he has reluctantly decided to recommend this course. The evidence before him was very conflict ing. Many sportsmen in country districts and farmers recommend that the provision for a close season be adhered to, while a number of acclimatisation societies, agricultural and pastoral associations, and a few sportsmen in rural districts strongly recommend an open season for at least some classes of game. The Minister understands that considerable benefit has been experienced in some States of America by Deriodical close seasons, and considers that, the provision made by Parliament is generally right, but there is no doubt that quail are very plentiful in some bush districts, and are becoming a serious menace to farmers' grass-seed on newlysown bush land, and he has evidence before him that goes to show that they are responsible, to some extent, for the spread of the blackberry. No other variety of game seems to be over-abun-dant, but conditions generally appeal to be such that it has been decided to recommend an open season for one month as stated. HOCKEN LIBRARY OPENED.
