<- — AN AMERICAN ZOOLOGIST AND GEOLOGIST. By Telegraph.— Preso Association.— Copyright. LONDON, 30th March. The death is announced of Alexander Agassiz, American zoologist and geologist ; aged 74. Alexander Agassiz was born at Neu« chatel, Switzerland, on 17th December, 1835, and went to the United States at the age of eleven. From 1874 till 1898 he was director and curator of the Museum of Comparative Zoology of Harvard Massachusetts. His investigations in marine zoology were i-eiy extensive, and he assisted Sir Charles Wyville Thomson in the examination and classification of the collections of the Challenger in her voyage of 68,900 mil«s of deep-sea exploration. He spent the winters of 1876-81 in deep-sea dredging in the West Indies on board the United States Coast Survey steamer Blake ; was in charge of an expedition to the Sandwich Islands, the West Indies, the Fiji Islands, the Great Basin , Reef of Australia ; was also in charge of the expedition of the United States steamer Albatross to the Panamic regions and Galapagos, to the Centra! Pacific and Eastern Pacific ; was overseer of Harvard and fellow in the same until 1885. From 1874 to 1885 he was curator of the Museum of Comparative Zoology and director of the same since 1902. To the musuem he made gifts aggregating over one million dollars. His writings on zoology and geology are numerous.
