[BY TELEGRAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, This Ds*r As a result of the opposition in Hastings to the harbour loan proposal, Mr. A. H. Rusbell, the Hastings representative on the Harbour Board, has tendered his resignation. A Ratepayers' Protection Association is being formed to prevent revenue being spent on permanent works at the breakwater until the board under the new constitution is elected in February next.
At 10 a.m. on Thursdajy, sth May, the Bishop of Wellington will consecrate St. Peter's Church, Palmerston North. The Bishop of Wellington has arranged to hold confirmation services as follows during April: — Tinui, 11 a.m. Sunday, 17th; Castlepoint. 4 p.m., 17th; Blairlogie. 2.30 p.m., Monday, 18th; BrookI lyn, 7 p.m., Sunday, 24th; St. Mark's, Wellington, 7.30 p.m., Monday, 25th ; Island Bay, 7.30 p.m., Thursday 28th. Shortly before 8 o'clock last evening, tho Petone Fire Brigade was called out to suppress an outbreak of fire in an unoccupied dwelling on the Esplanade, the property of Mr. R. White. The brigade quickly overcame the ilai..es, and also succeeded in saving an adjoining property from destruction. Had the fire not been discovered in its eaily stages, a whole row of houses would have been in great danger on account of the exceedingly strong gale that prevailed at the time. The house in which the outbreak was discovered was damaged to the extent of about £150, while on tho neighbouring premises — also untenanled— £so would fully coyer the dama-ge. Tho two houses, which were undergoing repair, were insured for £460 each in the United office.
