DRKDOK KILKKN WAKD. Eighty-eight days out from Paisley, via Sue« Canal and Melbourne, the Westport Harbour Board's dredge Eileen Ward arrived in the strram la»t evening, being broucht to an anchorage by Pilot I>.i»mmi. Captain 11. !.. Mnck report id that all were mil on board, and the trip from Melbourne was destitute ot incident. The dredge wan cleared by the port health officer this morning, and she is to be placed on the Patent Slip for cleanin? and general overhaul to prvpare her for work. The Ellccr. Ward Is a powerful twin-screw suction dredge, built by Fleming and Ferguson, Ltd., and specially designed for work on the Buller bar. Two centrifugal pumps specially constructed for lifting sand, gravel, shingle, and boulders are driven by independent triple expansion engines, and together are capable of raising 3000 tons ot material per hour from a depth ot 40ft. The suction pipes may be operated whether the dredger ] is steaming or stationary. The Eileen Ward ; was constructed under the superintendence ol I Mr. L. Larsen. chief mechanical engineer to I the Westport Harbour Board, and was named after tho daughter of the Bight Hon. Sir J. 0. Ward, by Mrs. J. Brown, of Kelson. NEW STEAMER ROTORUA. Word hits been received to the effect that the new passenger and mail liner now being built by Messrs. Denny Brothers, of Dumbarton, for the New Zealand Shipping Company, will be named Rotorua. The steamer will be similar in general respects to the Ruahine, but slightly larger, and will be fitted with a combination of reciprocating and turbino engines as in the case of the Otaki. CHECKING THE SMOKE NUISANCE. Much difficulty is experienced in checking the smoke nuisance in busy ports, and apparently there is room for some ingenious inventor to leave his mark on the steam fleets of the world in this respect. The latest preventer brought under notice was tried in Melbourne a few days ago. It is known as the Storey Smoke Preventer. The essential principle ot the Storey preventer lies in drawing off from the furnace the inflammable coal Rja which floats near the furnace crown, and then delivering it beneath the grate bar.*, co that it passes through the incandescent inasa of co.il and is thus thoroughly consumed. At the Victorian test lib of coal evaporated 10.41b of water. Tlic coal consumed iv effettinc this result was 411b per square foot of grate. A striking feature of the apparatus is the absence of a smoke-stack. The boiler tried was of TO horse-power, and was fitted originally with a stack 2ft square by 80ft high. All the product) of combustion were earned oft and a flood draught was main- j tamed by a 3in flue riling only a few feet above the top of the boiler. A cable message advises that the barque Hazel Craig, which was compelled to put back to Sjdney owing to her decks being strained while en route from Newcastle to Wellington, resumed her vovagc yesterday. She brings a sbipnient of timber. The Te Anau will take her first shipment of coal from Westport to Dunedin. She was to hate sailed last evening. The Arahura, from Greymouth and Westport. was to leave Nelson at 11.S0 jn.to. to-day for Picton and Wellington. She is due here at a late hour to-night. It is expected that "the Shaw-Savill liner Kia Ora, lrom London, will leave Auckland for Wellington via Gisborne on Saturday. She would then be due about Wednesday next, and will discharge a quantity of explosives before berthing. j This afternoon the Buteshire will >aye for j Timaru to conclude loading. The vessel returns to Wellington on Sunday next f0, % bun- J ker coal, and will leave early next wetA for London. Mr. y. Fama yesterday rejoined the Wairau as engineer. The Niwaru. from London via Australian and northern ports, is due at Wellington on Sunday next. Upon discharge the vessel wilt leave at noon on the 7th April for Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne to load for London.
