TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION INTERRUPTED.
The Telegraph Oilier advised today that communication with Auckland was totally interrupted, and woik lor north of Hamilton will bear heavy delay. Information received by the Wellington Post Office shows that the violence ot the storm hat> been well up to the forecas-l. Communication with Wairangi, on the Fiench Pass line, was also interrupted this morning. A swish of the gale brought down a wiie just when Paeroa was pathetically announcing its plight. The "broken melody" ran :—: — "The heavipst flood ever known in Pacroa occurred this morning. Tho streets are submerged three or four feet. . . ."
A surprising estimate of chaiges for note-taking and transcribing (per typewriter) has been .made by the delegates at one of the Labour Conferences now sitting ir. Wellington The members dosircd twelve type-wiitlou copies of a report of their discussions and resolution». They expected that a reporter should sit in the meeting-room from 9 H.m. to 5 p.m. (with a bieak for a meal), and in the evening get his notes transformed into twelve neatly typed reports, for a total emolument of 15s. The reporter, to whom this .staggering offer was made, worked out a little smii. Even if lit cr>tiift inon&gb to do five or six topics — a tedious process — at one operation (likely to consume three or four houis), it would be necessary to get the balance of the irepoit* typed by somebody else. Tor the pros- i pev-tive employers desired to have their daily deliberations in type over-night. At a modest computation, he discovered that the necessary assistance woujd cost 16s, and he would, therefore, have the prospect of toiling hard for ten hours for a wage of minus a shilling a day. He explained the figures to the conference's secretary, but the delegates persisted in their belief tha* the vhole ''job" was worth only 15s a day. This lordly salary, with pickings, was going begging to-day. Messrs. W. F. Shortt, Ltd., will sell on the premises, Johnston-etreot (Standen Estate), Karori, on behalf of Mr. Aich. C. Frasor, tho contents of a six- roomed hou»e. The ealc will «tart to-morrow at 1 o'clock. In connection with the Mayoral election, a notice to Mr. Wilford'- old Brooklyn committee is published in our nd\prtising columns. The V.M.C.A. will hold it- gymnasium elates on Monday next. The Leaders' Corps will meet for practice to- j night. " J
