THE CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA.

» — At a meeting of the Rowing Championship Regatta Committee' on Monday a sub-committee waß authorised to have a second course surveyed, at a cost not exceeding £5. It was reported that ample accommodation had been provided at Picton for the boats of the visiting oarsmen. The harbourmaster at Picton notifies that no steamer, launch, or vessel will be permitted to go upon the course over which the races will be run on Picton harbour five minutes before each race starts, or during the time any race is in 'progress.. Mr. W. J. Perano has been appointed clerk of the course. The aquatic contributor to the Marlborough Press writes :—"ln: —"In connection with the Regatta Committee's decision to have a second course surveyed, I understand that the work is one of considerable magnitude, and that it cannot possibly be completed by Monday next. The competing crews may rest assured, however, that the Champion Fours race will be\ started under favourable conditions. 'The responsibility of deciding whether the water is too rough for rowing or not rests with Messrs W. W. Chambers (chairman), G. A. Smith, junr. (starter), and Chris. Fredericks (umpire), and I have every confidence in their judgment and impartiality." Six Champion Four crews are now to be seen every day training on the harbour, and the only ones to arrive in Picton are the Stars and Otago. The skiffs dodging to and fro are a pretty sight, and the operations of the crews are keenly watched by local enthusiasts. Marshall, the Wanganui sculler, is in splendid form, and .it is anticipated by many that he will give Stone, the present champion, a hard go. A very fine best and best four-oared boat, built by George Towns, has been pieced together at Picton by members of the Wanganui Union crew. The boat only arrived in Wellington a few days ago, and will make its first appearance in rowing contests on Monday.
