OBITUARY.
A COMMERCIAL MAGNATE. Bj Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received December 15, 8.5 a.m.) LONDOX, 14th December. Sir Alfred Jones, President of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, is dead. Sir Alfred, wno was 63 yearp of age, was senior partner in the shipping firm of .Elder, Dempster and Co., of Liverpool. He was chairman of the Bank of British West Africa, and was connected with other commercial and industrial ventures. Ho founded the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and for this and other services to the West African colonies and Jamaica received the honour of knighthood in 1901. AN ART COLLECTOR. (Received December 15, 8.30 a.m.) LONDOX, 14th December. The death is announced of Mr. George Salting, a well-known art collector. For many years My. Salting spent £30,000 annually derived from his Australian sugar estates and sheep farms upon art objects. His collection 1 of* Oriental china is said to rival that of Mr. Pierpont Morgan. It is believed that Mr. Salting's collections hays been bequeathed to the nation. MR.. JOHN" MACKRELL. (Received December 15, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, 14th December. Mr. John Mackrell, formerly solicitor to the Governments of New Zealand and New South Wales, is dead. Mr. Mackrell suggested to the late Sir Julius Vogel the system of issuing colonial loans in the form of inscribed stock.
