King Edward received Tom Lewis, tho .boy who distinguished himself in the Newport landslip disaster in July last, and presented him with the Albert Medal. Lewis, who is a boy of fourteen, at the risk of his life, crawled into a small hole 30ffc below the surface, and worked in ifc head downwards for two hours, sawing a beam, with a view to releasing a workman who had been overwhelmed by the landslip. The earth suddenly collapsed. Lewis was hurriedly rescued, but the workman was killed. Another workman, who had been pinned down by falling timber and eaith, was released by the amputation of his legs, but he died soon afterwards. The Albert Medal was instituted in 1866 for the purpose of rewarding acts of heroism performed by civilians at sea or on land.
