PERSONAL MATTERS.

Mr. W. J. Napier, formerly a member of Parliament, is on a visit to Wellington in connection with Auckland Harbour Board affairs. Mr. J. W. Walker, a prominent figure. in Auckland District mining circles, is on a business trip to Wellington. He will probably go to England early next year. Among the passengers from South by the Maori this morning were the Hons. C. Louisson and E. C. J. Stevens, M.L.C.'s, Dr.- Gilray, and Mr. C. P. Skerrett, K.C. Rev. A. Thompson, Masterton, will visit the United Kingdom early next year. While he is absent Rev. L. Thompson, Carterton, will be moderator for the Masterton charge. Mr. C. M. Beidsierk, the well-known champagne vigneron, who has been touring New 'Zealand, will leave Wellington for Sydney by the Ulimaroa tomorrow on his way back to France. Engineer-Lieutenant Sydenham, R.N., has been appointed Admiralty representative at Westport in succession to Engi-teer-Commander Wheater, R.N., who leaves for England at the end of the Archdeacon Foster, of Matabeleland, arrived by the Tongariro from Capetown yesterday, will tour the South Island, return to Wellington, then go on to Auckland, and thence to the Islands, afterwards visiting Australia, and returning to Buluwayo at Easter. Mr. J. Ryburn was yesterday licensed by the Wellington Presbytery as a minister of the Church. He has decided to become a missionary, and may be appointed to work in India on behalf of the New Zealand Church. He is a brother of the Rev. R. M. Ryburn, Wanganui. Mr. Finlay Bethune, Secretary of the Johnsonville Lawn Tennis Club, was the recipient of a "Doherty" racquet yesterday afternoon from his club mates. Mr. F. T. Moore, president of the club, made tho presentation, and asked Mr. Bethune to accept it in recognition of the valuable services he has rendered in years past, and as a token o fthe high esteem and appreciation in which he was held by every member of the club. A Press Association telegram from Palmerston North states that His Excellency the Governor and Lady Plunket will be leaving that town at the end of this month, and will for a time travel in various parts of the Dominion. On 10th February Lady Plunket, with her children, Miss Hill } and Captain GathorneHardy, will leave for England. His Excellency will then travel throughout Nevj Zealand, making his (headquarters at Wellington, until he leaves the Dominion, which will probably be in the latter end of May or earfy in June.
