On her run down from Napier. •to Port Chalmers a day or two ago the Shaw-Savill steamer Delphic averaged a speed of over 12 knots an hour. This smart performance is attributed to the covering of white lead and tallow with which her hull was coated when the vessel was in Otago Dock a few weeks ago. The Delphic remains at Port Chalmers till the 24th inst., and is due at Timaru on Christmas Day. She arrives at Lyttelton on the 31st inst., and completes loading there. Thence the vessel comes to 'Wellington to rebunker, and will sail for London on the 7th January, in time for the March sales. TAINUI 1 S SMART RUN. The local agents for the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company have been advised of the arrival of R.M.S. Tainui at Plymouth on Monday .last, the 13th inst. The liner sailed from Wellington on the 4th November, and has thus effected a smart passage of 39 days— two days ahead of schedule time. Captain W. Waller rejoined the Wimmera at Auckland on Monday after holiday leave, and Captain AY. Foulis, who had been temporarily in command of the Victoria, returned by the latter vessel to Sjdney for orders. Tapley and Co., of Dunedin, received cabled advice that the Glasgow-owned tramp Kish, 4703 tons, en route from Monte Video (whence she sailed on the Bth November) to Newcastle, will call off the Otago Heads for orders. This course is presumably owing to -the coal miners' strike. At the annual meeting of the Union Steam Ship Company the shaieholders approved of the superannuation scheme for officers and engineers. She will sail for London early in January. It appears that the new Tyser liner Star of Canada arrived at Melbourne from London on Saturday last, and, as the local agents have been advised by cable, the passage was thus effected in 38 days— a highly creditable performance.
