THE CRIMINAL BAROMETER.

COURT RETURNS. According to the Magistrate's Court quarterly returns for the period ending the 30th September, thete were 1181s male and 128 female persons taken into custody, summoned, or apvjrehended during that time. During 'the corresponding quarter of last year the figures wcrer 1328 males and 157 females. Other comparisons are as follow (last year's figures being placed in parentheses) : —Discharged for want of prosecution or want of evidence, 88 males and 9 females (101 males and 6 females) ; dismissed on the merits, 33 males and 3 females (47 males and 4 females) ; committed for trial or sentence, 48 Tiales and one female (46 males) ; 'summarily convicted, 1013 males and 115 females (1134 males and 127" females) ; fined, 499 male? and 26 females (547 and 44 f emaks) ; imprisoned in lieu of fine or surety, 151 males and 23 f» males (182 males and 13 females) ; peremptory imprisonment, 75 males and 14 females (118 males and 22 females) ; whipping, 4 males (one 'male) ; bound over with or without sureties, .1 female (2 females) ; oiders> made, 128 males and 33 females (136 males and 31 females) ; convicted and discharged with caution, 156 males and 18 females (150 males ano 15 females) ; criminal fees-paid in stamps* £124 5s (£136 16s) j criminal fines paid in stamps, £634 18s (£466 Is). . The annual conference of the New Zealand Baptist Union, will open- in tho Baptist Church, Vivian-street, Wellington, - next Wednesday afternoon, and will last a week. There will ba 110 delegntes — a record for the church iv Ne^y Zealand. Mr. A. S. Carey, of Christchurch, is this year's president. Messrs. A. L.
