The match of tho Australian cricket team against Derbyshire began at Derby this morning. Rain delayed the start, but when play commenced the weather was brightening and the wicket was good. The attendance numbered fifteen thousand. The teams were composed as follow : Australians : Carter, M'Alister, Hartigan, Trumper, Gregory, Macartney, Ransford, O'Connor, Whitty, Carkeek, and Hopkins. Derbyshire : R. B. Rickman, L. <t. Wright, Chapman, R. Sale, L. Oliver, Morton, Cadmari, Humphries, A. It. Warren, Needham, and Lowe. Rickman, the county captain, won ths toss, and Wright and Morton opened the innings. Three runs were scored off Whitty's first o\er. From the first ball O'Connor sent down Wright was smartly caught in the slips. Ono for three. Cadman, who succeeded him, stepping in front to meet an off-break of O'Connor's, had his leg stump removed, the score still standing at 3. A fine catch by Carter, at third man, in the second attempt, disposed of Chapman. Three for 17. O'Connor next removed Morton's stump with a swerver. Four for 45. Whitty captured Male's wicket without ! addition to the score. A blustering ' wind was causing the ball to swing. Needham was beaten by a swerving ball from O'Connor. Six for 46. One run later O'Connor, running in, took a re turn from Oliver. Seven for 43. Warren and Humphries made the best j stand of the day. The former, atter a good display, sent an easy catch back to O'Connor. Eight for 102. A remarkable catch by Macartney, who, running away at mid-off, took the ball righthanded, disposed of Rickman.
