A Press Association message advises that the tug Champion, which arrived at Auckland yesterday from Sydney, covered the distance in 4J- days,' an average speed of 11J knots per iiour being maintained. In conversation with Captain Halcrow it was ascertained that the J2OO-miles tow was expected to occupy about ten days, everything, of course, depending on thp weather conditions. The Champion is said to be one of the most powerful tugs in Australasia, and is owned by Messrs. J. and A. Brov/n, of Sjdney. The Leicester Castle, 'it will be remembered, put into Auckland on the 28th June in distress while bound 'fiom Monto Video to Newcastle. The ship had lost her fore top-g«llant and th« upper portion of her mainmast, and was in a moro or less battered condition, and the crew had had an adventurous and trying experience. According to the story told by Captain Robert Brown, the Leicester Castle left Monte Video on the 12th April, and all vent well until she was eight days out. Tho ship was then proceeding along under a light wind, when, without warninc, a big tidal wave, estimated at 120 ft high, struck the vessel. Had the ship been fully loaded she must* have met with serious consequences. As it was, she was thrown on her beam ends, and it was fully ten minutes before she righted asain. t Those on deck at the time the mountainous wave struck the ship were thrown oft' their feet. The captain supposes that the disturbance was due to seismic action under the sea. Tempestuous weai.ber set in on the 2Glh April, and further damage was done to rhc snip, which eventually made for Auckland. The Leicester Castle is an iron ship of 2007 tons register, and was built in 1882 by Messrs Oswald, Mordaunt; and Co., of Southampton. Her dimensions are as follows : — Length 273 ft 4in; breadth, 40ft 3in; and depth, 24ft 2in She is owned by Messrs. J. Joyce and Co.. of Liverpool. STAR OF AUSTRALIA' LEFT SYDNEY. Caolcd advice from Sydney states that the Tyscr steamer Star of Australia sailed from there yesterday in continuation of her voyage from London to New Zealand. Auckland will be tier first port, and after discharge i'ie pioceeds to Napier and Wellington. It is expected that the vessel will reach here about the olh August. Mr. J. Leonard, late chief officer of the steamer Corinna, will join the Whangape at Westport in> a similar capacity, vice Mr. P. J. Foster, who awaits orders ashore. / Masters of small coastal steamers have ooserved an unusually si rang sea from the north in the vicinity of Cook Strait during the past few days. The Aorere, on her last trip from Patea, covered the distance in an hour less than her usual time. It has been decided that the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's big linor Corinthic will make a call it Auckland for loading purposes about the end of August. 1 Tiie Italian barque Carraociolo, which put into Auckland in a disabled condition on Monday will, it is reported, discharge her cargo of nickel ore at the northern port, and have repairs effected. Yesterday afternoon the Hinemoa returned from the French Pass and Marlborough Sounds. She is to leave next Wednesday for Lyttelton. en route to the southern lighthouses and Island depots. Mr. Ernest Seymour, late of Wellington, who served his apprenticeship at the foundry of Messrs. W. Cable and Co., is now third engiueer on the Glasgow-owned steamer Inveran. At the time of writing a letter recently received by his parents ac Eketahuia the vessel v,as bound from London to Vladivostock vtith luilway iion.
