FEILDING NOTES.

[El TELEGRAPH — SPECIAL TO THE POST.] FEILDING, This Day. A report comes from a settler at Waiata, formerly known as Nokau, that a paddock of oats planted only a fortnight ago is already three inches above ground. This testifies to the mildness I of the season in all parts of the country surrounding Feilding. Farmers assure me that grass has never ceased growing this winter, and so mild a' season is picviously unknown in their experience. Just fancy .feed in such a state in midJuly. Yesterday and the day before were spring : like in their conditions here. Mr. Jones, of the v Petone Borough Council's staff, vrho hab been appointed clerk of the Pohangina County Council, in succession to Mr. J. Coyle, has been np in the district getting a few pointers. Sir. Coyle took up his new duties as secretary of the Wellington Hospital Board yesterday. Our farmers are still changing about. Some are selling off their dairy herds to go in for sheep and wheat, and others who did that sort of tiling a couple of seasons ago are now going back to the dairying industry. It took two days' sitting of the Assessment Court in Feilding to settle the objections raised to tha valuations in the borough and in the Oroua county. The court and the valuers showed an excellent spirit of give and take in dealing -with objections, but it was generally found that land had sold at good values in the town and country. The no-break East brigade is astonishingly strong in Feilding, and is growing stronger weekly. Systematic fasting is also being taken up here, as an alternative to operations in the treatment of disease. At afternoon calls now th-j topic of topics is. "Do you breakfast? or, how many meals do yon drop? Apiti is one of our farthest back settlements, and away up in the highlands above Kimbollion, yet its Co-operative Dairy Company had forty applications for the position of manager. Mr. Allwood, of Palmerston North, got the position. Card tournaments between friendly society lodges and townships are popular forms of killing time up here. Feilding has a strong card club, and the friendly societies are also conducting a tournament. Colyton, which beat a numerous team of Feilding card-players a few weeks ago, was beaten by 56 points to 44 on Wednesday night. Fred. C. Ross, of Kiwitea, is fo be tried on the 50th inst. on charges of embezzling money from the Cheltenham Dairy Company what time he was its secretary.
