MORE IMMIGRANTS. ARRIVALS BY THE ATHENIC.

«

The White Star liner Athenic arrived from London this morning with over 400 immigrants on board. They included people of all occupations from carpenters to stereotypes, clerks to shepherds. When they learned the actual state of the labour market in New Zealand they expressed surprise, but were not downcast. Mr. Stobart, secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters, was on board, and he put before his fellow tradesmen things as they are. He was met by the remark ; "Well, bad as trade may be, things cannot be worse than they are at Home." There were 165 Government assisted passengers, and these are in better circumstances than those who have come out entirely on "spec" and at full rates of passage. The 165 include 73 women, 59 children, 33 men, and of these, those who have been nominated by friends in New Zealand number 19 men, 14 women, and 9 children. The occupations followed by the assisted passengers and their numbers are as follow: — Farmers 11, farm labourers 11, dairymen 2, shepherd 1, domestic servants 18, housekeeper 1. The capital brought out by assisted passengers ranged in sums from £25 to £120. There were, too, young ladies among the assisted passengers who have come out to be married. The health of all 015 board has been exceptionally good. The immigrants were met by Mr. Danby, of the Immigration Department, and Miss Bremner and Mr. Proctor, of the Labonr Department.
