ANGLICAN SYNOD.

YESTERDAY'S PROCEEDINGS. WANGANUI CHURCH GROUNDS. BISHOP EXERCISES HIS POWER OF VETO. * The Anglican Synod resumed its deliberations at 4 p.m. yesterday, in tha Sydney-street Schoolroom. His Lordship Bishop Wallis presided. Mr. W. A. Izard brought forward a motion directing ihe Diocesan. Trustees to utilise the whole or part of the church acre in Victoria-avenue, Wanganui, for levenue-producing purposes, and to raise sufficient funds on the security for the purchase of a site and the building of a church suited to the needs of the parish. The Eev. A. O. Williams seconded the motion. It appears that portion of the ground is an old burial ground. The Bishop spoke at considerable length. He opposed the proposal that the bones of the dead should be interfered with. Archdeacon Tow good gave his support to the motion. At the present time, lie said, the land was useless, and no one could be buried there. Greater reverence would be shown for the dead if the bodies were taken up and removed to a place where they wtfuld have a lasting and honoured resting place. If hi& lordship vetoed a resolution of synod on the bubject he (the speaker) hoped he would do so after very serious thought. He emphasised the point that a right-of-way had been granted at one end of the 1 ground. This right-of-way traversed land where bodies had been buried. He urged the synod to adopt the resolution. Air. E. B. Brown (one of the trustees) supported the motion. After a long discussion, the motion was passed by both the clergy and the laity, but the bishop vetoed it. The bishop said it gave him very great pain to vote as he had done, but they had the right of appeal to the General Synod. Apaij^ from that, the synod here had not power to do what the motion directed. MAOTU MISSION. The Rev. T. H. Sprott resumed the debate on the following motion, tabled by the Rev. A. Jl. Johnson : — "That this synod agrees to contribute for the

year ended 31st March, 1910, the sum of £105 to the Maori Mission Board. . . ." Tho motion was carried. CLERGYMEN IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS. The synod then went into committee on Rev. A. W. .li. Complon's Bill, amending Act 8, in the direction of bringing the heads of four educational institutions (who happen to be clergymen) within the scope of the Pension Fund. The Rev. J. Jones (Hutt) moved an amendment that the Act should apply only to principals and headmasters when their positions, were such that they could only be held by a person in holy orders. * This was defeated on the voices, and the BilL was reported without amendment.
