FICTIONISTS AND A FIRE.
Two well-known novelists played a ' prominent part in a disastrous farm fire which broke out in the early hours of 17th May "(says the Daily Mail). Goulds Grove, Wallingford, the picturesque* home of Mr. Jerome K. Jerome, stands in close proximity to a farm belonging to Mr." lioadnight. About two in the morning he was aroused to find that the whole of the farm buildings and well-stocked yard adjoining the house were on fire. Mr. Jerome and Mi 1 . Pett Ridge, who was spending the week-end with his friend, guided the rest of the family to a jilace of safety, and then rendered yoeman service in helping to rescue the live stock in tho burning buildings. Mr. Jerome's billiard-room and its contents were destroyed, but the remainder of the house was saved. Fifty pigs, calves, poultry, and a largo quantity of implements and ricks were destroyed,
