Mr. G. Hydo. of Masterton, who lias completed a business tour of practically the whole of New Zealand, is of opinion that the depression is not so acute in the Houth Island as in the North. This (states the Daily Times) he attributes to the fact that people in the South have not- been speculating to the bame extent that they have in the North, and in consequence business is on a sounder financial basis. He was impressed with (he substantial buildings in Dunedin, while Invercargill and Ashburton appeared to him to be two of the brightest little towns in New Zealand. The season had been exceptionally good, and right along the* line between Christchurch and Invercargill agricultural work appeared to be in full swing. With regard to streets and lighting, he had not seen a single town that would compare favourably with Masterton in that respect, and was quite convinced that it was ahead of any in New Zealand.
