CHRISTCHURCH ITEMS.
[BY TELEGRAPH — SPECIAL TO THE POST.] OHHISTCHURCII, This Day. Frequent applications having been made to the Education Board for grants for washhouses, the board decided to obtain a report on the subject. Yesterday the Buildings Committee recommended the board to deal with applications in a generous spirit, and to consider each on its merits. The committee was of opinion that where a, building to cost more than £15 is asked for the remainder should be provided sIt has jbeen reported to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals that there was cruelty in connection with some calves taken in trucks to Broken River a few evenings ago. It is stated that in one truck alone about eight calves were down, and that tlireb at least were dead. The committee of the society is considering whether or not a prosecution should be instituted. The experiments which Dr. Fan- and Mr. Florance are making to ascertain the radio-active properties of artesian wells in Christchurch are almost concl'idod. Their report will be presented to a meeting of the Philosophical Institute on Tuesday next. The Harbour Board had a rather interesting question before it yesterday. The Heathcote Road Board offered the board a number of debentures. The Road Board stated that if the debentures were taken up it would be able to provide work for a number of unemployed, and on this ground several members of the Harbour Board favoured the purchase of £2000 worth of debentures, but there was a strong body of opinion against voting money out of hnnd, and a motion to refer the matter to the Finance Committee was carried. After the board had adjourned for lunch, the opinion of its solicitor was sought, and he stated that the trustees had no power to invest in Road Board debentures, and he though the Harbdur Board should not do so. This question was discussed in the afternoon, and the board decided to get the solicitor's fuller opinion as to whether Road Board debentures are legitimate investments for Harbour Boards.
