THE OYSTER FISHERIES.
The Marine Department, questioned on the subject by a Post reporter this morning, slated that the short supply <>f oysters this season is entirely due to the small area of workable beds wh^ch was left when it undertook the duty of picking the oysters last season. Had the present system of picking and sale been adopted a few years earlier, the department is satisfied that it would have been able to maintain a sufficient supply year after year. It is now considered that it will be necessary to go in for a system of planting oysters on rocks which have become depleted, and the matter is now under consideration by the department.
Mr. C. Andrews, Chief Inspector of Schools in Western Australia, who has been enquiring into the education system of New Zealand, left for Auckland on hia way back to Australia this morning.
