WESTPORT STATISTICS.

WESTPORT, This Day. The Westport Coal Company's output of coal for June was 56,380 tons 8 cwt, and the exports 54,184 tons 9 cwt. The State Coal Mines' output was 3359 tons 3cwt, and the exports 3219 tons 15cw. The briquettes and eggettes output was 1302 tons Bcwt, and the exports 1299 tous 9cwt. The Westport-Stockton Coal Company's output was b/93 tons 14cwt, and exports 6649 tons 14cwt. The total output was 67,835 tons 13cwt, and the exports 65,353 tons 7cwl. Of this amount 1701 tons were shipped to foreign ports. The export of timber was 61,83b superficial feet. The rainfall for twenty-two days was 12.40 inches. For the half-yearly period ending 30th June the output from _the coal mines showed an increase of 3996 tons 19cwt over the corresponding period of last year, and this in face of the fact of the Millerton- mine fire. Tho Denniston mine production was 30,000 tons in excess of that mine's output for the first half of last year. The figures for tho two periods aie : Westport Coal Company, 307,631 tons and 265,827 tons 7cwt; Seddonville State Colliery, 26,393 tons Bcwt and 33,058 tons 17cwt ; West-port-Stockton Company, nil and 39,605 tons 3cwt. Totals, 334,024 tons Bcwt and 337.991 tons 7cwt. SEDDON MEMORIAL AT ONEHUNGA. AUCKLAND, 7th July. The Seddon memorial at Onehunga was unveiled this afternoon by the Hon. G. Fowlds, Minister for Education. The Onehunga and Mount Roskill 'Cadets, under Captain Kenny, and the veterans from the Veterans' Home, under Captain Archer, formed a guard of honour. Tho speakers included Messrs. Massey, Lang, and Bollard, M.P.'s. The memorial has been erected at a cost of £700. It stands at the meeting of five roads, and will answer the purpose of a shelter, post-box, and drinking fountain, and will also light up the locality with five lamps. RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION. CHRISTCHURCH, 7th July. The question of religious instruction in schools was again under discussion at a meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board to-day, when a statement prepared by ministers of various denominations at their recent conference was laid on the table for consideration. The chairman said the report broke no new ground, and he did not see what the board could do in the matter. After discussiop the board decided to receive tho statement. TIMBER COMMISSION. CHRISTCHURCH, 7£E July. Asked by a Press representative when, he expected the report, of the Timber Commission to be made public, Mr. Ell, M.P., said that he did not know, but he was of opinion that there was no reason for delaying its publication. It [ was his intention to communicate with Ministers on the subject. STOLEN WHISKY. TIMAttU, 7th July. A young Timaru man named Spurdom has been arrested on a charge of being the actual thief of the barrel of whisky stolen from the Crown Hotel, *or which four seamen are in custody. CHANGING HANDS. TIMARU, 7th July. The South Canterbury Dairy Factory Company's property is being sold in sections. The central factory and some creameries have changed owners, the purchasers being an opposition firm, who have been churning home separated cream. PROPOSED SALE OF LAND— A PROTEST. CHRISTCHURCH, 7th July. A public meeting, addressed by Messrs. Ell, Witty, Taylor, Russell, and Laurenson, M.P.'s, unanimously agreed to a motion protesting against the proposal of the North Canterbury Charitable Aid Board to sell a portion of the Twigger Estate, and expressing the opinion that the interests of the public would be best served by the board retaining possession of the land and disposing of it. by way of perpetual lease, with provision for revaluation, as Dy this method facilities would be given to a large number of wage-earners to secnre sites for homes on easy terms. It was stated that the board had practically decided to abandon the proposed sale of the land. A FALSE RETURN. NELSON, 7th July. At Takaka to-day, J. Dodson, charged with sending in a false return stating that he had dipped sheep, was convicted and fined £10 and costs. Tins was stated to be the first prosecution of the kind in the Dominion. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED ARSON. AUCKLAND, 7th July. Patrick Mooney was committed for trial to-day on a charge of having attempted to set fire to tho dwelling house of Nellie Fowler, Vincent-street.
