EARTHQUAKES. IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE.
MANY HOUSES COLLAPSE. GREAT LOSS OF LIFE. By Telegraph —Press Association.— Copyright. PARIS, 12th June. Two violent shocks of earthquake have occurred throughout the Riviera and at Marseilles, in the South of France. The shocks caused great excitement in Marseilles, where the streets and cafes were thronged. Aix, in the Department of Bouches-du-Rhone, a town of 25,000 people, 20 miles north of Marseilles, was plunged in darkness through the failure of the electric light service. The entire population of the town remained out of doors till dawn. Houses collapsed in several towns in the district affected. Ships which were at anohor in the port of Toulon strained at their cables, owing to a powerful seismic wave. PROLONGED DISTURBANCE. A VILLAGE ENTIRELY DESTROYED. TWENTY BODIES FOUND. (Received June 14, 8.40 a.m.) PARIS, 13th June. The seismic wave in France lasted from 9.15 to 9.40 at night. There were four shocks of earthquake. Luckily they occurred just before bedtime, otherwise there would have been hundreds of victims. Fifteen persons were killed at Lani- i bese, fifteen miles north-west of Aix, and the village of Rogues was entirely destroyed. Twenty bodies have been found in the village.
