A WORD ABOUT TWO MONARCHS!

TO THE EDITOB. . Sir, — A& an erstwhile non-supporter of his Worship the Mayor, I must, sh; with your permission, tender my tribute of praise as a ratepayer and citizen, of his "up guards and at 'em" policy in regard to his early attempt to clean up the city's financial Augean stable. "I hae nae doot but that its badly wantit" ; also, I consider he deserves credit for that leaven of humanitarianism, natural with him, but so long simply slobber and platform vote catching talk in the past. I refer to his advice to the Engineer in regard to employment during the winter, not to dismiss any hands on account of the council's decision at its last meeting to reduce expenditure by £5000. Then that Happy Valley-road work, I am more than pleased that such a well-named Happy healthy Valley-road to the ocean beach is to be made fit to use, and also connected up with Island Bay. What a bright prospect for the near future for constitutionals, by bike, horse, or vehicle, no long denied by the hitherto unformed track and its break across the Happy Valley Stream in two places down near the sea. I doubt, sir, whether many citizens know the beauties of that old Happy Valley winding load between the mountains, about eight miles in length, to the ocea-n beach. Touching another topic of the hour, I refer to our chief of the Treasury Benches— "Shades of Mr. Seddon" — was he an autocrat? Did he turn the lock in the people's hall of legislature, and dump the mace off the table, because he could not trust his colleagues to run the people's business? Where is the one man Government now? Are we downhearted? — No! T commend your paper for its consistent endeavour to wake citizens up on this matter of the adjournment of the country's business, and I hope, though somewhat late in the day, there will be a record gath-. ering on Tuesday next. — I am, etc., LOYAL, BUT SANE.
